Leticia Takes The Reins

August 2, 2017

Princess Park welcomes 3rd year apprentice Leticia Griffin to the team. We had a little chat to Leticia to get to know her more.

Where did the interest in racing spark from?

My interest in racing was accumulated when I began my first job track riding for Wendy Potter at 15 years old, the job came about when I took on retired racehorse, Roman Spirit. I used to ride one or two horses at the track for Wendy before I went to high school.

I always had horses growing up, I loved being outside but It wasn’t until I began riding track work, gallops and trials that the love for racing really came about, I became more and more determined on having a career as a jockey. I started working for Dan O’Sullivan full time when I finished school.

I was successfully accepted into Racing Victoria’s Program in 2014 and began my apprenticeship at age 19, making sure I had a few years experience riding track work and trials. I believe I am more focused and determined now than ever after the taste of success in my career so far riding 3 winners, with my biggest highlight riding a winner on my first ride at Donald aboard Captain Crackerjak. The biggest part of my interest in racing is my absolute passion for horses.

Is your family involved?

I am the first person in my family to have a career in racing, although horses have always been a huge part of our lives. I have been around horses as long as I can remember. Growing up I did pony club and competing in mostly eventing and showing. I still compete now.

What are your racing ambitions?

  • To outride my 4kg claim

  • To ride a winner for Pat

  • To be making the most of every opportunity

  • To complete my apprenticeship

Whats the one race you would love to win?

The one race I would love to win is the Cox Plate. It’s a race I have always admired watching and the atmosphere looks unbelievable on the day.

Do you have weight issues, or are you a natural light weight?

I am very lucky to be a natural light weight, walking around at 51kgs.

What are you hobbies outside of racing?

My hobbies outside of racing are mostly riding, retraining and being around my own horses, they bring me a lot of happiness. I also love being outdoors, travelling, road trips and spending time with my mates. My favourite TV series to watch is Wentworth, I'm beyond hooked and just cant get enough of it!

Leticia is looking forward to being a part of Princess Park’s Ballarat team and gaining more experience around the track as she progresses through her apprenticeship.  Keep a look out for her name around the racetracks!
